Dives and Affordable Eats

DIVES AND AFFORDABLE EATS

Bakesale Betty 5098 Telegraph, Oakland $$ Oh. My. God. Fried chicken sandwiches, chicken pot pies and desserts to die for. All that on ironing boards and with a friendly, fun staff. http://www.bakesalebetty.com

Burma Superstar 1345 Park Street, Alameda $$ This place does not qualify as cheap eats (more moderate priced eats), but we had to find a category to honor this excellent restaurant that is our favorite place for lunch. The tea and rainbow salads are amazing. http://www.burmasuperstar.com

Cactus Taqueria multiple locations  $ Reliable, reasonably priced, tasty food.   Mexican with a California flair run by a wonderful family. http://www.cactustaqueria.com

La Mexicana Restaurant   3930 International Blvd, Oakland $$  Amazing handmade tortillas and chips, mole, enchiladas and chile rellenos.  A favorite of Andrew's for 30 years.  No atmosphere and the waitress can be a bit bipolar (one day you'll love her the next day she'll snarl, but it's fun to earn her respect).

Phnom Phen House  251 8th Street between Alice Street and Harrison Street, Oakland   $$ A favorite Camboidian spot.  Try the green papaya salad (not on the menu) or the traop ann neun sach chhrouk (eggplant, ground pork, shrimp) or the tamarind, chicken, pineapple coconut soup -  #13 soup. Great peanut sauce and BBQ chicken for the less adventurous. http://www.phnompenhhouse.com

Razan's Organic Kitchen  2119 Kitteridge Street, Berkeley  Great healthy, hole in the wall featuring middle eastern burritos and plates.  Lots for the vegetarian here.  Great vibe and good prices.  After you eat, walk to the corner of the block for a latte at Peet's coffee or go to a movie at one of five movie theaters in walking distance. We love Razan's. http://www.razanorganickitchen.com
